RADIO SHOW on “Web 2.0 for Politicians”

Hear about the most interesting new media, techniques and campaigns from the big names in our Hot Air Balloon

February 12th & 14th

While Web 2.0 has revolutionised how many people are using the internet with each other, the political sector is still slow to adapt. Hear about the most interesting new media, techniques and campaigns in terms of the use in politics and communication from the big names in our HotAir Balloon.

These invited experts – amongst others famous technologists, Online strategists, bloggers and heads of social networking platforms – are brains behind the internet, searching out new trends of web 2.0 as well as creating new strategies of using the internet themselves. 

The online radio show took place via audio and web conference in two about 1.5-hour sessions. In the shape of a "Hot Air Balloon" game  the experts needed to convince the listeners of their added value to society, in order not to be thrown out of the sinking balloon. This online audio show followed by a Question-Answer session open to the live political audience and was moderated by Bridie Nathanson from POLPIT Ltd., Belgium. 


Session of the 12th February

First expert: David Weinberger (mp3-audio: 2.046 KB)

David Weinberg gave a detailed view on the internet and main developments on web 2.0, including the consequences for politicians and political decision makers. He picked up some of his own experiences with political online campaigns. Furthermore he talked about the way he sees e-campaigns and gave practical tips to the audience how to use web 2.0 in order to achieve an advantaged relationship between voters and politicians.

Second expert: Heather Holdridge (mp3-audio: 1.921 KB)

Heather Holdridge - Political Director of "Care2" - delivered insights in this world’s biggest civic online campaign & social networking platform. She talked about trends of online community building in Europe and illustrated how politicians should get involved in these activities as well as how they can interact with this kind of organisations.

Third expert: Steven Lenos (mp3-audio: 1.684 KB)

Steven Lenos is an eDemocracy and eParticipation expert from the Dutch Institute for Public Policy where he advises politicians and civil servants on using the Internet for interacting with citizens. He was talking about what parliaments and governments should do in the web 2.0 strategies.

Discussion:

During the discussion the participants had the possibility to address their questions directly to the experts. This first session illustrated the different use of web 2.0 in Europe and in the USA. Justin Oberman joined the debate and reported on latest developments of the mobile aspect of web 2.0 and political e-campaigns.

Session of the 14th February

First expert: Alan Rosenblatt (mp3-audio: 587 KB)

Alan Rosenblatt discussed the secrets of successful eCampaigning. Further, he introduced general trends in cyber politics and gave a user focus on web 2.0.

Second expert: Chris Casey (mp3-audion: 1.750 KB)

Chris Casey talked about his ideas on successful e-campaigning. He picked up examples of current activities in cyber politics and talked about necessary resources to run successful e-campaigns. 

Third expert: Mark Pack (mp3-audio: 978 KB)

Mark Pack gave insights on e-campaigns in the UK and identified key areas for using the internet in the process of political communication. 

Fourth expert: Steven Clift (mp3-audio: 1.523 KB)

Steven Clift gave an overview of his experiences in e-politics and civic-activity.


Discussion:

The discussion focused on pros and cons of e-campaigning and examined different experiences like for example good practices in performing national online conversation. Furthermore the discussion looked at the different audience groups and their interests, their motivation to participate as well as their contributions to politics.
